4a) Make a final decision about your logical argument research topic. What is it? Questions to ask yourself:

What have we been studying in class this year? We have been studying about global/international issues that affect our economy and our government.
Which subjects appeal to me? Crime and discrimination are problems that appeal to me the most because I feel it is so widely spread around the world.
What are people writing about?Discrimination of certain people because of their race or gender.
What's most interesting to me?Social problems among many people
Can I find information about that?Yes, using online newspaper and other sources.

4b) Why are you most interested in the topic of argument selected? I feel that it is everywhere around the
world, not just here in the United States. There are a whole lot of worldly problems that many people tend to ignore.

  1. How many states have some form of legalized medical marijuana? Around 5-10 states have some form of legalized marijuana but mostly for medical reasons, recreational use is still banned in most states.
  2. Describe the statutory conditions of medical marijuana use in one of those states. They are used to treat people in the hospital for certain medical conditions involving severe pain or for cancer treatment.
  3. What is the best reason to legalize/not legalize medical marijuana in all states? Explain. It is best to legalize it because it has plenty of health benefits in treating very sick people and it could actually help the growth of the economy if the government taxes it.

  1. Should there be international child labor laws that can be enforced in all countries? I feel that child labor should only be for countries that are in desperate need of workers. It is unfair to automatically send children to work when they have other occupations and the country isn't in need of it.
  2. Is child labor justifiable when the income gained is used to sustain the family? It could be because it would be beneficial in not only the family but for personal benefits as well. As long as the children are in good position and are sustaining in the family, it is definitely justifiable.
  3. Are current U.S. labor laws too strict in regards to child labor?Yes, because many children are starving and working in harsh conditions that aren't necessary to sustain families. Theres other ways to work out money problems.
  4. Why is child labor regarded as a social evil? Many kids are suffering while working in harsh conditions and they are suffering and not being treated the same as other children meanwhile it isn't exactly their fault for their families poor conditions.

  3. Give an example of a data aggregation company that has experienced a security breach.Microsoft because many people attempt to hack many parts of it with different tools and they need data aggression to help keep  it secure not only for the company but for the people as well.

  1. Should alcoholism be viewed as a disease or an addiction? Explain. Alcoholism should be viewed as an addiction because a disease is something you are born with or is caused accidentally from physical or mental damage. Nobody is born addicted to alcohol, they just get hooked on it from abusing it way too much.
  2. Should alcoholics be held solely responsible for their drinking habits? Why or why not?Not necessarily because many people drink for different reasons whether its problems in their life or just because they have the money to abuse it. But considering alcohol is legal, many people tend to abuse it thinking there is no potential risk.
  3. Should moderation treatment options be offered to alcoholics? Yes, it is always a good idea to stop people from drinking too much and causing great physical and mental harm to their body. It will also prevent them from taking their life away.

Racial Discrimination

    1. Why is racism so rife in the world?Individual development is a major concern for many people and leaders throughout the world. They have gone with many beliefs from the past that influence the way many parts of the world are today. It is all about cultural diffusion and the spread of different ideas.
    2. How should Racial Discrimination be addressed? People should make propaganda signs and put the topic about with posters and fliers going around major cities and city councils that have major control over situations like this.
    3. Has the United States done enough to address the historical injustices to African Americans, Native Americans and other groups? If not, what needs to be done? They do what they have to do and play the role that they are supposed to in helping with certain problems and conflicts many areas of the world are facing. But it is also up to us to get the word out and use our own methods to solve or at least improve social conditions.

Choose five topics that you think are potential research topics for your paper and briefly (in 2 to 5 sentences) explain why these topics are of interest to you.

1. Racial Discrimination is a topic that ticks me off a lot because there are many people in this world being treated unequally and unfairly because of their race. People cannot have certain jobs or do certain tasks because of their skin color or ethnicity/nationality. This is something that needs to end sooner or later because it is driving the world to go worse than it already is with social issues and discrimination.
2. Alcoholism is another issue that interests me because I know so many people who have had alcoholic problems and did whatever they could to solve it. Alcohol is a major crisis because it causes people to become very violent and can make them commit many crimes, assault being #1. It is important for people to take care of themselves and be responsible for their actions and to know their limits.
3. Another major concern of mine is identity theft. I am mostly concerned about this one because when someone has your identity, they have all of your records and personal information. It can cause major problems for you and make you want to jump off the empire state building.
4. Another major concern of mine is child labor because many young kids are being forced to go to work and not getting the proper education they need and deserve. This is especially in china where child labor is very high. They make a few of our clothes that we have here and it is the adults that should be responsible.
5. One more thing that concerns me is medical marijuana. This concerns me because it will help save a lot of lives of people suffering many diseases. This includes glaucoma, cancer, epilepsy, anxiety disorders, etc. It could also boost the economy because it will affect certain debts and imported/exported goods.
Make a list of four or five things that "tick you off." Explain why. (Choose significant things that others might experience as well. For instance, your little brother might tick you off, but there is little chance that this annoyance will yield a possible paper topic). It is possible that one of these annoyances can be transformed into an interesting, engaging, and researchable project.

1. Not being able to solve certain problems or situations ticks me off because I feel that I need to solve everything that heads or comes my way. If a problem occurs, I need to solve it.
2. Another thing that ticks me off is rape because I feel that rape is some act of assault and violating personal rights of others and it makes this world look a whole lot worse, it also increases the crime rate in each city depending on the rate.
3. Another thing that ticks me off is war in this world over small things and making it into a huge crisis. Such as trading and not agreeing with another nations views or beliefs on certain aspects of society. I feel that each country shouldn't affect or be affected by another countries culture and we should all mind our own business.
4. One more thing that ticks me off is child abuse because it is a very violent and unreasonable crime and it ruins certain people through certain aspects of life and the person who committed the abuse will have people look at them in a different way than a normal person because of the violence and crime they committed. All of this is certainly unnecessary and unreasonable and should definitely be punishable.

  8. What is “crowdsourcing?” Using sources of different encyclopedias and putting it all into one.
  9. What do you think about the concept of “any fool in the world” being able to write articles for Wikipedia? It could be true because Wikipedia is accessible to edit and you could just click the link up top and provide info that could be incorrect.
  10. Do agree with the idea that “total idiots” could edit Wikipedia and of that being a good thing? Explain. No, because you could put wrong info purposely and try to fool other people, affecting their knowledge and the topic they are trying to learn about.
  11. Why do you think Wikipedia grew so fast and became so popular in such a short amount of time? Because it is extremely helpful in gaining info from the encyclopedia.

  13. What did you learn from the anecdote about the Wikipedia article on Einstein going to Albania for a passport in 1935? He took a cab to a pizzeria and had 3 buffalo slices.
  14. Explain this quote from the article: “I can’t imagine who could have written such detailed guidelines other than a bunch of people working together...It’s common in Wikipedia that we’ll come to a solution that’s really well thought out because so many minds have had a crack at improving it.” This is saying that Wikipedia could not be made by one person but a bunch of people working together.
  15. The author of the article states that Wikipedia “grew organically.” What does he mean by that? That he wasn't the one providing all the info but the people using the encyclopedia.
  16. How has Wikipedia “been the greatest collaborative knowledge project in history? It provides all accessible info you want to know and with the proper linked sources they got the information from.
  17. Based on your own opinion and experience with Wikipedia, do you agree with the above statement or disagree with it? Explain. I agree because I have used Wikipedia a whole lot during my life and I have found it to be extremely helpful.
  18. What does the author mean by “wiki-crack?” That it is a key to hidden sources or things you are having a hard time finding.
  19. Based on the article, do you believe Wikipedia is a reliable source of information? I feel that it is because it is mostly true and provides the link to where they got the info from.
  20. Do you believe its possible for a 16-year-old from New Jersey to write “insightful” Wikipedia articles? Yes, because insight is an easy topic to write about and she would already have or get all the info from the encyclopedia.
  21. How do you feel about basing your own research on something a 16-year-old wrote on Wikipedia? I would feel OK as long as she puts the links to the sources she got her information from.
  22. What does Jimmy Wales mean by this mission statement: “Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge?” He means that imagine if we could gain all the knowledge in the world just by using linked sources.
  23. Do you agree or disagree with this mission statement? I agree because qwe would all be a lot smarter and much more intelligent.
  24. Do you think Wikipedia has succeeded in its mission? Yes, because it is extremely helpful to provide info and has plenty of sited and linked sources.
  25. Do you agree or disagree that ordinary people, people without degrees, can “be part of the process of creating and distributing knowledge?” Yes, because they just might've had trouble in the past.
  26. Based on your reading of the article, would you yourself use Wikipedia for your academic research? Yes, because it is all true and accurate as long as they site the source the person got their information from.
  27. Would you yourself like to write and/or edit Wikipedia articles in order to be “a part of the process of creating and distributing knowledge?” Why or why not? No, because I don't have sources to where I got my information from and I may not be completely accurate in the info in which I am giving.

Homework 1

1. A pretty good strategy to make sure the students are web literate is to give them lessons and websites to go on and search for certain information about technology. Technology is used on multiple things nowadays and is really hard to get by without. Its good to know a lot about the web and internet, especially for jobs.
2. Teachers should have problem solving skills and have experience with the internet already and start searching for more and more sites and sources. They will gain information in their heads from various websites.
3.Schools should definitely block some websites because it could distract the students from doing what they're supposed to be. It will cause them to dwell on other things and procrastinate doing school hours. This will prevent them from getting work done and getting good grades.
4.Yes, the Internet is as big as the printing press because there are millions and millions of Internet users worldwide and it has become a big part of life. You can search whatever you want and get most of the information you want if you look hard enough.
5.I think that the part of our culture that will be most affected is how people communicate with each other and relationships with other people. The Internet allows us to talk to other people online. It also allows us to access their information and know more about them. It also affects library's because instead of going to buy a book, you can just look it up on the internet now.

The subject I enjoy most reading about is American History because I find it interesting how our country became the way it is through many struggles and hardships.

My favorite hobby is listening to music because it brightens up my mood and makes my mind "wander" and I also feel it could expand my imagination.

If I win the lottery, I would put half the money aside and spend the other half on things that I would want to buy. This includes clothes, accessories, video games, etc.

The type of volunteering activity I prefer is cleaning up things because I feel its simple and will keep me out of trouble.

My favorite school subject has always been math because I am very good at problem solving with numbers and I could do exceptional math problems and equations in my head that a normal person couldn't do.

If  I ran the world, the first thing I would change would be the economy because it is very bad and it is hard to find a job nowadays due to the stock market crash and other economic problems.
